David H. Culbert (1943-2017) was a diligent media historian. More than anything else, his scholarly interest was the research on the history of propaganda, information policy and mass persuasion. He was John L. Loos Professor of History at Louisiana State University, an active IAMHIST council member and editor of the Historical Journal of Film, Radio, and Television from 1992 to 2012.
The prize is awarded on behalf of the Culbert family for outstanding works looking at the history of ways in which media, public opinion, politics and diplomacy interact. In the years before the regular bi-annual IAMHSIT conferences take place, monographs and anthologies that were published within the last four years in English can be submitted on or before November 1 as a hard copy to all jury members. The $2,500 prize is awarded every other year at the IAMHIST conference. The prize has been established by an endowment from Lubna Culbert.
Rules of the prize:
- The prize is awarded bi-annually.
- Invitations for submissions and names of the winners will be published in the Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television, on the IAMHIST website, on flyers, displayed in the universities of teaching members of IAMHIST, and by letters to appropriate bodies.
- The prize will be awarded for outstanding printed materials that deal with the topic of how media, public opinion, politics and diplomacy interact. Submissions have been published in the preceding four years.
- Three hard copies of the work must be submitted to the IAMHIST prize sub-committee members by 15 December of the year preceding the IAMHIST conference. Please note that any customs duties must be paid by the sender.
- The winner will be selected by a sub-committee under the chairmanship of Tobias Hochscherf. The other two members of the sub-committee are the current president of IAMHIST and one of the co-editors of the HJFRT. If any of the jury members submits work, he or she is replaced by a member of the IAMHIST council.
