Thursday, January 8: IAMHIST master class on media & history
Friday, January 9: One-day conference – Crisis, culture and propaganda in the 20th century (IAMHIST and CARISM)
CALL FOR PAPERS: IAMHIST master class on media & history
Date: Thursday 8 January 2015
Are you a graduate or doctoral student, post-doc, or young professional currently working on a project in which you engage issues concerning historical film, radio or television or issues in media history? Are you interested in presenting your project to a small group of experts and peers? Then this master-class of the International Association for Media and History may be just what you are looking for. The master class deliberately has a broad scope, including any research in the field of media & history. But as this is a pre-conference event for the IAMHIST/CARISM one-day conference on Crisis, culture and propaganda in the 20th century (January 9th 2015), proposals in this field are especially welcomed.
Participants are expected to give a short introduction to their project and to prepare some central questions for discussion. Senior members of IAMHIST will engage with your project and discuss sources and strategies for developing it further. Maximum 9 proposals will be accepted.
The day is designed to be a networking event for emerging scholars and media professionals and an opportunity to engage with leaders in the field in a less formal setting than an academic conference. There is no charge for attendance and lunch and an evening cocktail are included. Participants are expected to attend both the master class and the conference.
To apply for this event, send a 300 word proposal of your project and one paragraph bio to IAMHIST secretary general Leen Engelen (info-contact@iamhist.net). Deadline is November 15th 2014.

One-day conference
Crisis, culture and propaganda in the 20th century
IAMHIST and CARISM (Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Analysis of the Media)
Friday, 9 January, Location: University Paris 2 – 92, rue d’Assas, 75006 Paris
This one-day conference brings together – for the first time – IAMHIST and CARISM members who are interested and specialized in the relation of media, history and propaganda. Through a critical lens, the different papers explore the cultural and historical fluctuations of propaganda (studies) during periods of crisis in the 20th century by focusing on archival documents, comparative aspects and/or case studies that deal with various media of (mass-) persuasion. With the objective of confronting different disciplinary approaches to the topic, this one-day conference also aims to rethink and discuss the theoretical frames of propaganda studies and their evolution within the digital transformations of the last decades: thinking with the ‘past’ and ‘present’ of propaganda (studies), what changes are currently affecting the modes mass persuasion can perform? The existence and creation of digital archives, how do they influence and re-shape current and past patterns of propaganda (studies) on a national and/or international level? In this regard, which epistemological, theoretical reflections and frames could or should emerge in the work of historians and media scholars?
